Meat Products

The Phyto Diet recommends the inclusion of meat, because it is such a vital source of high quality protein. Our bodies need protein for growth, repair and maintenance of lean, calorie burning healthy tissue.

Protein is made up of groups of amino acids.  Of these, 8 essential amino acids cannot be manufactured by our bodies, so we have to get these from our diet.

High quality protein, found in organic, lean meat, is most likely to produce good, lean body tissue.  It contains all the right amino acids in the right proportions to maintain a healthy body.   Low quality protein, found in many other foodstuffs such as processed meats and packaged 'ready meals'  is more likely to be converted into fat and stored under the skin, affecting our health, our weight and our overall feel good factor.

cow-grazing.jpgSo the message from PG is....eat meat!!  - but only once or twice a week. It is healthier to eat organic meat from animals allowed to graze on organic pastures, raised naturally without chemicals or growth hormones, and humanely killed.  These animals absorb the greatest level of nutrients from the soil and the water, and are stress free, so their meat is far better for us.  However, this is rather costly especially with today's money crisis. Why not try the cheaper cuts of meat - Liver, Kidneys, cheaper cuts of Chicken and Beef. The latter stewed up with lots of vegetables make a very healthy broth to feed all the family.  Animal livers are rich in iron and Vitamin A and B and cod liver oil which a lot of people take as a dietary supplement.

Lean red meat is no more fatty than chicken and gives us not only protein but also iron. Too little iron (around 40% of women in the UK don't get enough) can lead to hair thinning and loss.

Various forms of imitation meat have been created to satisfy some vegetarians taste for the flavour and texture of meat. These include - Seitan (wheat gluten), Quorn (edible fungus), Tofu. With added flavourings they make the finished product actually taste like chicken, beef, lamb, etc.

Pork is the most widely eaten meat in the world, providing about 38% of the daily meat protein in the world, although consumption varies from place to place depending also on religious beliefs. Pork is preferred in China whereas Beef is preferred in the USA. Pork is traditionally considered a white meat but it is usually grouped with red meat for it's nutritional value. Pork is very high in Thiamin, zinc and vitamin B6, however, it is high in cholesterol. The leaner cuts of Pork are therefore, the best to eat.

PG likes to eat meat nearest the bone, but not too often!!!
