Massage... for healing the spirit

Pamper session as I call it! Yes, it's great to go to the health farm or spa for a professional massage to recharge your body. It's very relaxing. To most people it's a treat, however, you can do it at home.

Far too many couples spend very little time together and massage is a way to interact one's body with your partner. Touch is a very important sense which is sometimes forgotten. Hold hands or even touching toes for 30 mins.  Skin to skin contact promotes the release of the 'feel good' hormone oxytocin resulting in lower blood pressure and slower heart rate.

There are so many beautifully scented aromatherapy oils on the market each with different therapeutic properties. They restore the balance in the body, increase energy levels and stimulate the body's immune system. Many different types of oils are used as a carrier - coconut, grape seed, sesame, pecan and mustard oil. The aromatherapy oils such as Neroli and Pine oil are mixed with the carrier oil. Salts are also used in association with oils to remove dry skin.

Massage is the practice of soft tissue manipulation with physical, functional, and in some cases, psychological purposes and goals.

The Jacuzzi was introduced by the Jacuzzi brothers in California in 1968. Jacuzzi was used for hydrotherapy and as a personal, high-end relaxation hot tub with jets and pumps for both indoor and outdoor use. Physical therapists and masseuse have incorporated the famous jacuzzi to their profession in homes and clinics. Today, virtually every resort and hotel has a Jacuzzi Spa to relax in and enjoy with pleasure.

A Swedish massage is not related to the country of Sweden - most Swedes have, in fact, never heard of a Swedish massage. Swedish massage uses five styles of long, flowing strokes to massage. The five basic strokes are light touch, kneading, rhythmic tapping compressions and vibration. Swedish massage has shown to be helpful in reducing pain and joint stiffness.

Reflexology..is a complementary therapy which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms. The theory of Reflexology is based on a perceived energetic flow of 'meridians' in the body.

Reflexology dates back to ancient Egypt, India and China. It can be used to help restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore it's own healthy balance.

The term Spa is associated with water treatment. The practice of 'taking the waters' of hot and cold springs in hopes of effecting a cure for some ailments dates to prehistoric times. Archaeological investigations near hot springs in France and Eastern Europe revealed Bronze Age weapons and offerings. In England, ancient legend credited early Celtic kings with the discovery of hot springs at Bath. However, today's Spas emphasise dietary, fitness, massage and recreational programmes more than the traditional bathing activities.
