Dairy and Eggs

Yes….dairy products are full of fat and they are hard to digest.  Many people have an intolerance of dairy products.  Not everyone will recognise this intolerance.  Symptoms like lethargy, skin problems, digestive problems, can often be traced back to an intolerance of dairy products.

dairy_products.jpg But.,  As long as your butter, milk and cheese is organic and your eggs fresh and free range, dairy products and eggs provide vital sources of vitamins and minerals – probably the most important being calcium which we need for strong bones. They should be included in the Phyto Diet in moderation, because of the high fat level.  But in moderation, dairy products and eggs are an important diet component – especially for growing children.

Eggs add protein to one's diet. They are also an inexpensive single food source of protein. Recently, chicken eggs that are especially high in Omega 3 fatty acids have come on to the market. These eggs are made by feeding laying hens a diet containing polyunsaturated fats and kelp meal. Please make sure you check the nutrition information on the packaging as it is different for each of the brands. An egg is only 68 calories.

Every child is told milk helps build strong bones - now scientists reckon it may also stop cancer spreading.  Milk is a pretty complete food and it's nutrients are so protective.

Falling milk sales have gone hand in hand with the increase in obesity.  Milk contains an acid which increases the percentage of extra calories that are converted into lean muscle rather than fat, and protects against diabetes, narrowing of the arteries and some cancers.

Goat's milk is delicious with a sweet and sometimes salty undertone, goat's milk is the milk choice in most of the world. Unlike cow's milk there is no need to homogenise goat's milk. Perhaps the greatest benefit of goat's milk, however, is that some people who cannot tolerate cow's milk are able to drink goat's milk.

Tofu was discovered 2000 years ago by the Chinese - it is sometimes called 'the cheese of Asia' because of its physical resemblance to a block of farmer's cheese. Tofu is a highly nutritious protein-rich food that is made from the curds of soybean milk.

Not only is Yoghurt a wonderful quick, easy and nutritious snack, but researchers are finding evidence that milk and yoghurt may actually add years to your life as is found in some countries where yoghurt and other fermented dairy products (like kefir) are a dietary staple. Yoghurt is a fermented dairy product made by adding bacterial cultures to milk which causes the transformation of the milk's sugar, lactose, into lactic acid. This process gives yoghurt its refreshingly tart flavour and pudding-like texture.

Likewise, another dairy product - yoghurt -can help the body burn fat.

Milk is better than designer sports drinks when it comes to re-hydrating after a workout.  The calcium in it will strengthen your bones, while fizzy drinks have been linked to low bone density.

So don't forget - the pinta!

NB: Goat’s milk products are now widely available through better quality supermarkets and they possess all the goodness of cows milk products but are much easier to digest and lower in fat.
